Small Commission: CHANGE COMMISSION
East Durham Creates is one of 39 Creative People and Places programmes across the country funded by Arts Council England. We launched in 2014 with the aim of getting more people involved in creativity and culture where they live. Having previously focussed our work in East Durham we have now expanded and are working in areas right across County Durham. We are also undergoing an imminent change of name and branding which is very exciting and provides us with the theme for these commissions. The theme of Change.
East Durham Creates is about trying new things, building on what’s already happening, learning what works – and what doesn’t – and pulling together to bring about change in County Durham. We are focused on grassroots community driven arts and culture and with this in mind, the final decision-making in this process will lie with our Creative Champions who are our links to the communities in which we work.
About Change:
We have two commissions of up to £2000 to award; one must be working with people in the North of the County and the other in the East of the County.
We hope that these commissions will be used to promote inclusive opportunities for people residing in some of the most left behind neighbourhoods in County Durham and enable and inspire them to become more involved in arts and culture.
We are looking for projects that will involve people from some of our left behind neighbourhoods in the North and East. For your information, these wards are listed below:
East: Blackhalls, Deneside (Seaham), Easington, Horden, Peterlee East, Peterlee West, Shotton & South Hetton, Trimdon & Thornley
North: Craghead & South Moor, Annfield Plain, Stanley

The commissions will need to be completed by end of April 2024.
Applications will be considered by individuals and groups and must be arts and culture focused around the theme of Change.
