The sessions will explore tile making and relief carving onto tiles to create a wall frieze, inspired by dramatic and theatrical Greco-Roman friezes. The works will be fired and ready to take away and exhibit.
For the context of this project, alongside the group the artist will discuss social class and socio-economic barriers, elements that run through their artistic practice.
Participants will think about art, craft and materials in relation to class and perhaps look at personal family heritage to create a series of scenes or symbols in ceramic tiles that represent working class heritage and pride – though this is not compulsory.
As an example, the artists maternal grandfather worked as a factory rope maker, so rope and plaits are motifs that often appear subtly throughout their work as a nod towards their heritage and working-class roots.
